Description of this Site

Eco Sangha is devoted to the propagation of Buddhism as an inherently ecological perspective. Whether we focus on our individual self, a group, our relationship to our parents or our relationship to the land, the approach is always ecological. Indeed, from the Buddhist perspective of “cosmic ecology,” how we treat our parents is reflected in how we treat the land. Eco Sangha is a response to the environmental crisis, most particularly our destruction of the earth through Buddhism’s three poisons of greed, hatred and ignorance. Through the use of the Internet, our goal is:

1. to enlighten fellow Buddhists to the inherently ecological nature of our religion.
2. to inform the environmental/conservation community that science and religion (at least the Buddhist religion) can be seen as a unified whole.
3. to encourage Buddhists of all countries and traditions to incorporate into their shrine the image of the Buddha in “Earth Touching” mudra (gesture) to represent the ecological teaching of the Buddha. 4. to link Buddhist environmental groups together, to cooperate where possible, to report news, to inform each other of upcoming activities and exchange ideas.

Our website is presently housed at the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple (www.seattlebetsuin.com) which is also the home of Eco Sangha: Seattle. We invite the formation of other Eco Sanghas throughout the world.
