Affiliated with the Buddhist Churches of America, the Seattle Betsuin was officially founded in November 15, 1901 when Rev. Kakuryo
Nishijima, one of the Buddhist Priests that introduced Jodo Shinshu Buddhism to the mainland United States, held a service at a rented house located on 624 Main Street. Since this modest beginning those individuals who have found meaning in their lives following the path of Buddhism known as Jodo Shinshu (lit. "True essence of the Pure Land Way") have developed and maintained the current facilities found at 1427 South Main Street.
Through the dedication of the membership of the temple, the teachings of Jodo Shinshu has been a living spiritual force in the Pacific Northwest for 100 years allowing the community to survive many tragedies and drawbacks including such things as the death of a loved one or being interned during the hysteria of war, as well as sharing in the joy and jubilation of the union of two loving hearts in marriage or the addition of a new family member.
The Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple has also been an integral part in the dissemination of Jodo Shinshu in the greater community as well, producing many works of interest and relevance through our Research and Publication Department and our White Lotus Media Program.
We welcome you to join our community and participate in the larger tradition known as Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. Help us be a part of the next 100 years of Buddhism in the Pacific Northwest!
